It was 2015 that I first properly had moved out of home and started my life with Ben in Hamilton. Now I’ve got to say, coming from a smaller town, it took a long time to get used to a city and a city that was an hour ish drive from the beach. With change, comes adjustment, which I managed after six months, as there were many struggles I faced with. Adulthood is not that easy!

Looking at my life right now, it seems pretty crazy that I somehow can handle living away from family and friends but to tell you the truth, it’s not the biggest walk in the park. Now, most of my side of the family and friends live about five hours drive away so we really do have to make a plan and really pack properly when we go visit.

But what is also great is that my parents sometimes pass on through to visit us, when they have time, when they’ve been out of their town on some sort of excursion which is really cool. Having a family and some friends that you can try balance visiting each other with is awesome and it’s how we manage to keep relationships alive (along with regular calls, texts, and good ol’ social media).

As much as it would be good to live closer to family and my friends, it’s not ideal for Ben and I’s aspirations in life (Ben’s career is stable and rising well here and mine is just beginning) and that’s something we have all been able to accept. Not being ashamed of where you grew up and came from is what is important as most of that has shaped my personality and the things I love to do with my husband.

So yes, Hamilton is our home and where our heart is as a family, but my hometown is still an important part to me because of the memories I have and still make now with my husband and family, as well as the people that there that are important to me.

“Never forget where you came from, someday you might have to go back.” xx
